Fill Your Own -Review and Giveaway! {Contest Closed}

Over the past month, my entire family has been putting zero-waste products, from Canadian company Fill Your Own, to the test. We have thoroughly tested Fill Your Own’s shopping totes, food containers, medium-sized lunch kit, and water bottles. Here are our thoughts about these environmentally friendly products:

All the products we tested are extremely durable: the stainless steel containers do not leak, the stainless steel water bottles are sturdy, and the bags are well-built for holding a lot of weight. Health and safety-wise, the food containers contain no plastic, no BPA, and do not leach any chemicals into your food. The water bottles also do not leach and are free from BPA and phthalates. Both the stainless steel food containers and the water bottles are independently tested in Canada.

Be aware that neither the water bottles or stainless steel containers are designed for hot liquids and they are not suitable for the microwave (hopefully that’s already obvious to you and you know not to put any sort of metal in the microwave!). Also, the water bottles are leak-proof when the lid is snapped down in place. Note that they did leak when a certain almost-two-year-old walked around holding his bottle directly upside down (with the lid in the open position for drinking). KC, at age four, had no spills when carrying his water bottle around while he played.

As for washing and cleaning, the water bottles and containers are all top-rack dishwasher safe (although handwashing the water bottles is recommended). The lunch kit bag and the shopping totes are all machine washable.

The shopping totes are by far the best reusable shopping bag that I’ve tested to date. They are easy to fold and unfold, plus small enough to carry several in my purse (along with all my other purse stuff). Furthermore, these bags are strong! We loaded them with heavy groceries, carried them around, and were impressed by how well they passed our tests. Environmentally speaking, Fill Your Own shopping totes (and lunch bags) are an excellent choice: not only do they provide an alternative to plastic bags, they are made of 100% recycled PET (recycled plastic water bottles).
